Core Staff

Imran Malik
Study Support Centre Manager

Since joining Watford Learning in January 2001, my role has been very challenging and exciting, progressing from an IT Technician to Centre Manager. It has been a fantastic experience being part of a growing professional and respected learning centre in a sporting environment by all in Hertfordshire. My passion has always been ICT and learning, so working for this centre, which provides learning experiences for all ages makes this very rewarding. The atmosphere and staff at the centre, club and county have always been friendly, positive and committed to what we do, which makes my job irreplaceable!

Angela Howl
Study Support Centre Manager

Hi, my name is Angela Howl, I have been working for the Learning Centre in several different capacities since September 2004. My current role is Centre Manager. Prior to working at Watford Football Club, I was a primary school teacher in a large school in Kent where I had the additional responsibilities of Head of PE and Study Support Manager. In this role it was particularly evident the power and potential that sport has to motivate and inspire young learners. We are lucky at the Learning Centre as we able to capture this enthusiasm every day when students come to learn in our state of the art classroom based in the Vicarage Road Stadium.
I really enjoy working alongside Watford FC, Herts CC and the DCSF to create an educational resource that has a real wow factor. We are incredibly fortunate to have Watford FC players often visit all our projects; it really adds an extra sparkle to our provision. The students will always say meeting a player was their most memorable moment!

Kashan Malik
Assistant Centre Manager

Born in Watford, I grew up walking past the Stadium and never ventured inside the great walls surrounding it. I was 17 years old when I first set eyes on Vicarage Road Stadium whilst on a Business Studies trip and I was blown away. I began volunteering at the Learning Centre back in 2001 and the rest as they say is history.
I worked as an ICT Tutor on a part-time basis whilst completing my degree in Multimedia Communications and Computing and when I graduated in 2006 was offered a full-time position as the ICT Tutor. Since then my role has developed and I am currently the Assistant Centre Manager. My role includes teaching, providing ICT support, developing new courses and learning resources, PR the list goes on!
I am privileged to work in such an innovative and exciting organisation where I am given the opportunity to challenge myself and learn new things all the time. Working with young people and supporting them with their learning is also very rewarding.

Vicky McDonald
Study Support Teacher

I began my role as Study Support Teacher in September 2008 after moving from North Yorkshire to Hertfordshire. My principal role is on the Playing for Success project but I am also involved with Watford FC's Double Club project.
Prior to working at the Watford Learning Centre, I was an English teacher at a secondary school in Durham and, before that, I worked in administrative and marketing roles in Leicester. My diverse role at Watford Learning Centre requires the skills I developed in all of these roles. I really enjoy the variety of teaching a range of age groups, subjects and skills and look forward to being involved in new, exciting projects.

Katie Arnold
Double Club Teacher

I joined the Watford Learning Centre team in January 2008, having previously taught for three years at a primary school.
My main role is to coordinate the ever growing Double Club project, which currently operates in four secondary schools in Hertfordshire. This includes preparing and delivering lessons which combine sport with literacy and maths. Other responsibilities include taking groups on trips and organising tournaments against other Double Clubs.
I have always been passionate about sports so to be involved with a project that uses sport, particularly football, to raise achievement in education is brilliant!

Katie Bowden
Learning Centre Administrator

Being a big hornets fan I have always been connected to the club. It all started back in 1997 when I played for Watford and then became an avid fan of the Golden Boys following them home and away!
I began working at Watford FC back in 2005 when I started to work in the Club Shop for a part time job during my GCSEs as a paper round wasn’t going to get me my car!
In March 2008 I joined the Watford Learning Centre as the Administrator. I have always wanted to work with children so this was a great opportunity to get me started. From the moment I was told I had the job I have loved (nearly) everyday working here! I think the main reason why I have enjoyed it so much is because of the people I work with. From my managers, all the way through to the volunteers who contribute a few hours each week to help us with our core project Playing for Success (PfS).

Syma Fawad
Learning Centre Tutor

I started volunteering at the Watford Learning Centre when I left school, after finishing my GCSEs at Watford Grammar School for Girls. After working at the Centre for a term, I was offered the job as a paid tutor. I had thoroughly enjoyed working with the students and found it highly rewarding so I started my new role, which is very diverse. I work on PfS courses, delivering a range of numeracy, literacy, ICT and key skills activities to KS2 and KS3 students. In addition to PfS, I work on other projects such as Carry On, Family Learning, Drug Education and SAT Booster courses. I enjoy my job at the Watford Learning Centre and find it very exciting and rewarding.

Abi Buckley
Learning Centre Tutor

After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Sports Science, I moved from Nantwich, Cheshire to Watford, two years ago to gain experience in working with children.
I became a tutor here after volunteering as a mentor for a term, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I help deliver part of the sessions, and assist students during their time here! I work not only on the PfS programme but also on Film and Fitness, and SATS revision courses.
I love working here as I get to meet lots of young people of all ages, with lots of different personalities, and being based in a football club and using the facilities is ace! I also love working with the great staff here, and the pizza’s not bad either!
I also combine this role with being a Teaching Assistant at a local junior school, and am currently applying to undergo further training to fulfil my ambitions to become a Primary School Teacher.

Tutor and Mentors

Mentors are people of all ages who give up their spare time to volunteer at the Learning Centre. They work alongside the Playing for Success team, supporting students with their learning. They are positive role models for the students who attend the study support programme. The mentors develop good relationships with the students and due to this trust and respect is built. This helps to create a positive learning environment in which the students can achieve to their full potential.
